Public Education

The Brentwood Fire Department is committed to educating the public in fire safety. Most public fire education and public relation events are scheduled into the firefighter's regular working hours. Classes on various fire safety subjects are offered and encouraged to keep our communities and businesses fire safe.

Many BFD fire safety programs are offered, but not limited to, elementary school age children. Adults are encouraged to follow their children through the different programs and to also review with them the pages of fire safety literature that they may receive after an event.

A favorite activity among children is the Brentwood Fire Department's Kids Fire Safety House. The fire safety house is a 28 foot trailer with all the conveniences of home. The trailer is built with a living room including a fire place, a kitchen with appliances, and an upstairs bedroom. As children tour the house they are able to see various fire hazards that occupy their own homes.

The house also has a telephone the kids can use to place a sample 911 call. Vents located throughout the trailer allow a controller to present generated smoke into a selected room, forcing occupants to climb down to safety via a ladder in the upstairs bedroom.

Some of the BFD programs are currently undergoing updates include residential inspections, juvenile fire setter classes, smoke detector/carbon monoxide detector campaigns, station tours, scout safety merit badge programs, and the Kids Fire Safety House curriculum.

Tours of the fire department are conducted upon request to all ages. Most tours include a visit to the dispatch center, station tour, a video to the appropriate age group, and (naturally viewing) the BFD firefighting apparatus.
