Chief of Police

The Chief of Police is the Chief Executive Officer and administrator of the Police Department. He is ultimately responsible for the preservation of life and property, preservation of law and order, investigation and suppression of crimes, and enforcement of the state laws and municipal ordinances of the City of Brentwood. Duties and responsibilities include planning, coordinating and directing all aspects of department operations; responding to and directing major calls/occurrences; formulating orders/regulations; developing departmental budget and controlling expenditures; supervising and disciplining assigned employees; and providing information and assistance to the General Public. The Chief of Police reports directly to the City Manager.

 

 

Assistant Chief of Police

The Assistant Chief of Police is the second in command of the police department. He is responsible for the direct supervision of the supervisors of the Field Operations, Criminal Investigations, and Technical/Support Services Divisions. He is also responsible for planning and directing all administrative and technical activities of the department; ensuring staff training; development and compliance with high ethical standards; internal investigations; interpreting departmental policies; assisting, instructing, and disciplining assigned staff; responding to and directing major calls/occurrences; supervising and participating in general duties; and providing information and assistance to the general public. The Assistant Chief of Police reports directly to the Chief of Police.

 

 

Field Operations Division

The Field Operations Division is made up of three patrol shifts of uniformed personnel that operate twenty-four (24) hours a day seven (7) days a week. A total of 41 sworn personnel (1- Captain, 3- Lieutenants, 3- Sergeants, and 34 officers) are authorized and assigned to the Field Operations Division. Each shift is supervised by a Lieutenant. The Captain of Field Operations is responsible for the direct supervision of the Lieutenants and the overall operation and activities of the Division. The Field Operations Division is responsible for the following functional areas: All general patrol coverage and activities; Response to all calls; Motor vehicle crash investigation and reconstruction; Traffic control, direction and enforcement; Parking enforcement; Major and special events; Narcotics K-9 function; and unusual and emergency operations. The Field Operations Division is responsible for the initial investigation of all reported crimes and documenting the offense through complete and detailed reports, and investigation of some offenses as assigned. The Captain of Field Operations reports directly to the Assistant Chief of Police.

 

 

Criminal Investigations Division

The Criminal Investigations Division is responsible for the conducting criminal investigations which require a level of special expertise or crimes of a complex nature. The Captain of Criminal Investigations is responsible for the direct supervision of all personnel assigned to this division and the overall operation and activities of the division. A total of seven (7) sworn (1- Captain; 2- Lieutenants; 4-Detectives) and one (1) civilian (administrative and case preparation secretary) personnel are allocated to the division. The offenses normally investigated by this division include, but are not limited to: Death by violence or suspicious in nature; Burglaries; Fraud and Forgery; Rape; Assaults where serious injury occurs; Robberies; Kidnapping or Hostage situations; Vice and organized crime activity; and Property crimes where there is excessive or an unusual amount of dollar loss. The Captain of Criminal Investigations reports directly to the Assistant Chief of Police.

 

 

Technical/Support Services Division

The Technical/Support Services Division encompasses eight (8) operational functions of the department; Communications; Records/Municipal Court; Training; Community Relations/D.A.R.E.; Recruitment; Public Information; and Accreditation. A total of Five (5) sworn (1- Captain; 1- Lieutenant; 1- Sergent; 3-Officers) and twelve (12) civilian personnel are allocated to this division. The Captain of Technical/Support Services is responsible for the direction of all eight functions and reports directly to the Assistant Chief of Police.

- Communications: The Communications personnel dispatches for the Police and Fire Departments. The department’s communications function operates with the latest state of the art technology and equipment. The enhanced 911 emergency system immediately provides the dispatcher with the address and telephone number of each caller dialing 911. All police and fire units are tracked by the dispatchers utilizing a GPS and mapping system. The communications function operates three shifts, twenty-four hours a day seven days a week, with a total of ten (10) public safety dispatchers. This function is supervised by and is the responsibility of the Technical/Support Services Lieutenant who reports directly to the Captain.

- Police Records: The record’s function of the police department is staffed by two (2) civilian personnel who are designated as Records Clerks, and are under the direct supervision of the Technical/Support Services Captain. The Records Clerks are responsible for the data entry and maintenance of all police reports, citations, and criminal history information. They are responsible for processing requests for copies of police and motor vehicle crash reports, and they are designated as the Municipal Court Clerks and are also responsible for processing payments for traffic fines and court costs.

- Training: The Department’s training function is the responsibility of the Training Sergeant, who is under the direct supervision of the Technical/Support Services Captain. The Brentwood Police Department provides training in the latest methods and techniques of law enforcement, firearms and specialized training to all its personnel. The Training Sergeant is responsible for the development of training courses, scheduling for training classes, and documentation of the training attended by all personnel, and the annual session of the Citizen’s Police Academy. The Training Sergeant insures that training meets the requirements of the Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission.

- Community Relations/D.A.R.E.: The Department is dedicated to establishing and maintaining an excellent working relationship with the public and business communities of the City, which is accomplished through the program of Community Relations. The Technical/Support Services Captain supervises the department’s two (2) Community Relations/D.A.R.E. officers. These officers are responsible for carrying out the objectives and activities of this function which include but are not limited to; Neighborhood Watch Program; Business and residential security surveys; Safety talks to various groups of children; and teaching the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) curriculum at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

- Recruitment: The Technical/Support Services Captain is responsible for coordinating the department’s recruitment efforts with the City’s Human Resources Department in seeking qualified applicants for the police Department.

- Public Information: The Technical/Support Services Captain is designated as the department’s Public Information Officer. The responsibilities of this assignment include the release of information on incidents that occur within the department’s jurisdiction to the press and providing other information in regards to the department to the public.

- Property and Evidence: The Technical/Support Services Lieutenant is designated as the department’s property custodian. The responsibilities of this assignment include the intake, proper storage, ensuring chain of custody, submittal of evidence to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Crime Laboratory, and disposal of all property/evidence.  The Technical/Support Lieutenant reports directly to the Captain.

- Accreditation: The Technical/Support Services Captain is designated as the department’s accreditation manager. This assignment has the responsibility of managing the department’s accreditation program and is the department’s liaison with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc (CALEA).
