Safety and Crime Prevention Tips
Protecting Your Vehicle
Thefts from a motor vehicle are usually
a crime of opportunity. The majority of thefts last year were items in
plain view in the vehicle. Many of the 217 thefts from motor vehicles
could have been prevented if the above tips had been followed. By
observing these suggestions you will greatly reduce the possibility of
becoming a victim.
Personal Safety Ways to Avoid Being Victimized
Most victims of crime say, "I never thought it could happen to me." While Brentwood remains a relatively safe community, in today’s society, the odds of being a victim are ever increasing. Many people never want to think about the possibility of being victimized. Therefore when they are confronted by a criminal or criminal act, they are ill-prepared to handle the situation. Some people freeze and do nothing during a confrontation. Others panic and may cause their assailant to harm them needlessly. One of the most important ways to avoid becoming a victim is to constantly be aware of your surroundings. This can help you avoid being surprised by a criminal. Many criminals are always on the lookout for easy prey. If you are constantly aware of your surroundings you will not be any easy target. When out in public, walk with good posture and confident strides. Make eye contact with people you pass on the street. This will allow you to get a good look at people and will send them the message that you are confident and are not fearful. Another way to avoid becoming a victim is to mentally prepare for a confrontation. You can do this by playing the "what if" game. What if you are confronted by a man with a gun at the ATM machine? What would you do? Imagine yourself in this situation in your mind’s eye reacting realistically to the situation. When playing the "what if" game, always see yourself as surviving the confrontation.
