Public Works Goals

The goal of the Public Works Department is to provide ongoing maintenance services necessary to protect the City's infrastructure investment and to permit monthly pickup of brush when disposed of by residents. Examples of maintenance services include the installation and/or repair of potholes and other street failures, curbs and gutters, pavement markings, street signs, removal of street debris, street sweeping, right-of-way mowing, small drainage repairs, snow and ice removal and monthly chipper service. This department is also responsible for preparing the capital improvement program for transportation projects.

This department is also in charge of a yearly visual inspection on each street in the City which rates the need of installation of asphalt resurface of the streets. The department also has a "Spring" & "Fall" cleanup that makes it possible for the citizens to bring large items to specific locations for disposal. This is done the last three (3) Saturdays in April and October.

Chipper Service

The monthly pickup of brush at all Brentwood residences represents one of the most popular services of the Public Works Department. In an effort to provide this service in a cost-effective manner, the Department has an established route schedule. For information on the pickup schedule in your neighborhood, call the Brentwood Service Center at 371-0080.

Your help is needed in the delivery of this service.

Speed Hump Review

The City of Brentwood has an established policy for the design and installation of speed humps on certain residential streets to control speeding and discourage cut-through traffic. For a road in a subdivision to be considered for speed humps, the property owners along this road or a homeowners association must submit a request to the Public Works' office for review and consideration. Some of the minimum criteria for a speed hump include:

1) Speed humps can only be located on local roadways in a subdivision that connect with major arterial roads of the City.

2) The roadway must be a two lane road (less than 30 feet wide and with grades less than 6.0%).

3) The posted speed limit is 30 m.p.h. or less with a measurable speed problem.

4) At least 2/3 of the residents living within 1,000 feet of the proposed humps must support installation and agree to pay 60% of the cost.

5) The City commission must review and approve all speed hump installations.

While the City's share is 40%, the City will pay for all engineering cost and fees for preparation of studies and reports. The average cost per speed hump is $3,850, so the cost to homeowners is $2,310 per hump. Speed humps must be installed in multiples of 3-5 to be effective in controlling speed.
