Boiling Springs Academy opened for
classes in 1833 on what is now Moores Lane. The building is still standing.
Classes were arranged on three levels with each session lasting five and one
half months. The first level taught orthography, reading, writing, and
arithmetic and cost eight dollars. The second level consisted of English grammar
and geography and cost ten dollars. For fourteen dollars, a student could
matriculate in the third level and study Latin, Greek, and the sciences.
Boarding students stayed in neighboring homes. J. M. Crown Tilford, the first
principal, was a graduate of Cumberland University. The school continued in
operation until the early 1900”s. The building has also been used as a meeting
house for the Presbyterians and other denominations.
