The Codes Enforcement Section of the department works to ensure the safety and quality of the built environment by applying the highest community standards within the Brentwood Municipal Code. Our efforts are centered on the enforcement of the adopted building codes as well as various municipal codes that ensure community health and safety, proper property maintenance, and the elimination of nuisances.
Brentwood’s code enforcement professionals are directed by Building Codes Official, Tim Harrington.
Minimum building construction codes are updated periodically by the Board of Commissioners to ensure advanced building techniques on new construction in the City.
Brentwood code enforcement professionals inspect new construction and existing building alterations for conformity with approved plans and permits under the adopted building codes. Staff responds to emergency situations and complaints on unsafe structures and work without proper permitting. Notices of violation are prepared as needed and unabated cases are referred to hearings or city court.
In addition, the Code Enforcement Section directly supports the associated efforts of the Board of Building Construction Appeals. The Board hears special appeals to the established building codes when construction alternatives are judged to provide a superior alternative to standard practice. The Board of Building Construction Appeal is also charged with reviewing cases that involve structures unfit for human occupancy.
