World Book Encyclopedia gives you an official online, searchable encyclopedia. The R.E.A.D.S. website might have the book you need for tomorrow online.

Point of View Reference Center provides a series of essays that present multiple sides of current issues. There are 200 topics to choose from, each with an overview and both sides of the argument. Explore the historic events that shaped our nation with Issues and Controversies in American History. You have access to thousands of research topics and resources, including articles, transcripts, biographies and discussion questions. Need info on an author? Literary Criticism Online gives you online access to over 200 volumes of the book Contemporary Literary Criticism. It covers the writings and includes biographies of currently active and recently deceased authors. This online version matches the format of the print volumes at the library, but is available 24/7. Rosetta Stone  The publisher discontinued the library's service in April 2008, but "Tell Me More" is a new database with many of the same features. Try it instead!

TellMeMore lets you learn one of six languages from home. Choose from English, French, Spanish, Dutch, German or Italian. TellMeMore covers all major areas of language learning: speaking, listening, comprehension, reading and writing. This online learning program tailors itself to your needs, goals, and existing skill level. Sign in with your library card number and create a user account.

LearningExpress Library is a comprehensive, interactive online learning platform of practice tests and tutorial course series designed to students and adult learners succeed on academic or licensing tests. You’ll get immediate scoring, complete answer explanations, and an individualized analysis of test results. You can create your own individual username and password. This will let you keep track of the tests you take and track your progress.

Business and Finance Resources

Learn what to takes to get and keep the job of your dreams with Career Guidance Center. Over 3,000 different jobs in 94 industries are profiled here, along with interview and resume tips for people at all stages in their career. Click here for login info.

Starting a small business? Small Business Resource Center is a comprehensive database that covers all major areas of starting and operating a business including: accounting, finance, human resources, management, marketing, tax and more. Offers sample business plans, industry research, and franchising tips too. Click here for login info.

You'll need to do some research on competitors and potential customers. Find both with Reference USA, a database with millions of business and residential listings. Detailed business listings contain everything on a business, from list of executives to recent news and sales figures. Residential listings are gathered from over 5,000 phone books and includes neighborhood home values.

Trying to decide what to buy? ConsumerReports.org has 24/7 access to the past four years of ratings, the current issue of the magazine, and user reviews. Standard & Poors Net Advantage is a robust business database for investors. It includes market news and company profiles with financials and corporate activity. Stock reports, bond reports and mutual fund reports provide current and historical data on investments. The Learning Center has investment-related advice on broad topics. Heritage Quest
Genealogists and history students will find a wealth of material at Heritage Quest On-Line. The original U.S. census schedules, 1790-1930, are available for all states and counties. More than 25,000 local histories and family genealogies from around the nation can be read or searched for keywords.

Quickly find your ancestors in over four centuries of rare documents and records. Search thousands of historical newspapers, books, pamphlets and genealogies. Plus, the complete American State Papers, U.S. Serial Set, Social Security Death Index and more than 23 million obituaries.

Ancestry is a genealogy research product provides instant access to more than 1.2 billion names, more than 3,000 databases, primary source documents and images and a variety of genealogical research features. Available only at the library.

Research

The TEL Professional Collection is geared towards educators and includes coverage on health and fitness, school law, drug and alcohol abuse, learning disabilities, and psychology. TEL's Academic OneFile provides extensive peer-reviewed coverage of the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature and other subjects. If you need to research recent history, try CQ Historic Documents, a database that covers government documents from 1972-2003. Click here for login information.

For topic-specific coverage, try the TEL Military & Intelligence Database, Religion & Philosophy Database, or Science Database. Click here for login info. All three offer a  majority of full-text articles, but contact Reference Librarians if you can't access something you need. Interlibrary loan may be an option.

Newspapers

Looking for an article from the Tennessean? Try Newsbank, which starts coverage in January 1999. It also includes the Knoxville News Sentinel, the Memphis Commercial Appeal, and the Chattanooga Times-Free Press.

Looking for national newspapers? Look up citations in TEL's National Newspaper Index. Find full-text articles in  TEL's Custom Newspapers or Academic OneFile, but contact Reference Librarians if you can't access something you need. Interlibrary loan may be an option. Click here for login info.

Good health information can be hard to find. Use the TEL Health Reference Center Academic and the TEL Health and Wellness Resource Center to find definitions and articles. Find music from around the world with Smithsonian Global Sound, African American Song Service or the Classical Music Library Service databases. Each offers a fully-searchable play list of music that you can listen to thru headphones or your computer speakers.

TumbleBooks is a great new online service for kids! TumbleBooks are created by adding animation, sound, music and narration to create an electronic picture book which kids can read, or have read to them. There are games and puzzles that reinforce concepts from the book. They can even narrate and record their own TumbleBooks to send to friends and family!
